Hunting Florida’s Dinosaur
Have you ever wanted to hunt alligators but didn’t
know how to get started? The folks at the Razzor
Ranch in Florida has everything you need to get
started.
Hunting private ground, alligator hunters can
hunt year-round in the beautiful Cypress swamps
south Florida is known for. Hunters will have the
opportunity to see multiple alligators on a trip until
they find the one they are looking for. Licenses are
easily obtained online and cost less than fifty
dollars.
A typical alligator hunt can last an hour or all
day. There is no time limit as the crew works hard
to put you on the alligator you are looking for.
Whether it is a 6-foot alligator that will make great
table fare or a bemouth 13-footer that will rattle a
grown man’s nerves, they are swimming in these
swamps.
As you cast a big treble hook into the murky
depths of the swamp, everything seems to be going
just like any other fishing trip. Then it happens.
Your hook bumps a log that suddenly fights back. It
is then up to the hunter to fight just as hard, if not
harder.
Depending on the size of the alligator, the
fight to bring it to shore could be over in a few
minutes or it might take 45 minutes. However long
the battle lasts, it will be a battle few have ever
experienced.
Now, at this point the hunter has a decision to
make. The experienced guides will give an
educated guess as to how long the alligator is. If the
hunter is satisfied with the size of the alligator, he
or she will exchange their fishing pole for their
weapon of choice. If the hunter is looking for a
smaller or bigger gator, the hooked gator will be
released, and the hunt will continue.
Picture this scenario in your head. You arrive
at the Razzor Ranch, the guide asks what you are
looking for in a gator and you respond with a
respectable 8-footer. Throwing a hook into the
water you have no idea what you will run into.
Suddenly, you hook into a gator and the fight is on.
Forty-five minutes later a 13-foot gator surfaces at
the bank’s edge. Seeing the gator, you contemplate
taking it but stick to your guns and tell your guide
he is a little too big. The guide then releases the
gator back to the water and you continue to search
for what you are looking for.
This is the ultimate catch and release. You
were just able to experience fighting and bringing a
13-foot alligator to shore and it didn’t cost you a
dime. I must warn you though, if you do that too
many times your arms are going to feel like Jell-O.
The choice of weapon is totally up to the
individual hunter. Rifles, pistols, archery gear,
bangsticks, spears and even knives are all allowed.
The best advice I can give you is to choose what
you are comfortable with. An alligator has a very
small kill area, so you want to make the shot count.
It might even take a couple shots so be prepared.
Now that your blood is boiling and you are
ready to hook into one of these prehistoric
creatures, give Larry at Razzor Ranch a call and
book the hunt of a lifetime. Alligator meat tastes
wonderful and provides a cool addition to any
trophy room. And, think of the stories you can
share.
